So every piece is big enough to cut and glue. Buildings closer together than the merge gap become one piece, and anything smaller than the smallest piece is left off. Change both under Fine tuning: a smaller gap keeps more buildings apart, a smaller piece size keeps the sheds. Landmarks are never merged into their neighbours.
