MappSmith — Bike trail system builder

  • Can I add the loop I ride?

Yes. On the Trails step press "Add my loop" and pick a GPX, TCX, KML or GeoJSON file from Strava, Garmin or any GPS app. Your loop goes on top of the trails as its own coloured piece (or burned in), with a heart, star or dot where it starts. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
  • Can I move or rename the trail names?

Yes. The builder lays each name along its trail. In the Studio each one becomes ordinary text, still turned to run with its trail: drag it, retype it or delete it. The trailhead pins and parking marks become ordinary art and text too.
  • Can I turn pieces and marks off?

Yes, all of them. Under Details every layer can be switched off: the wood ground or terrain steps, the contour lines, the trees, the plaque, the frame and your loop. So can every mark: the name, the line under it, the miles of trail, the date and names lines, the trail names, the difficulty signs...
  • How are the difficulties worked out?

From the trail's own tags on OpenStreetMap. IMBA's scale wins where it is mapped (easiest and easy are a green circle, more difficult a blue square, very difficult a black diamond, extremely difficult a double black). Otherwise the single-trail scale is read the way North American trail signs gra...
  • How do I make a map of my bike trails?

In the Layers panel, set Product to "Bike trail system". The trail builder opens. Trail system: tap a network in the library, find one by its name, its park or its town, or press Near me. Trails: the trails mapped for mountain bikes are ticked, grouped by difficulty. Take off any you don't want,...
  • My trails run very close together. Why are they thinner than Bold?

Where a network is a tangle (a flow zone with trails side by side, switchbacks stacked down a hill), bold strips would weld into one blob that reads as nothing. The builder measures how close the trails run and draws them a little finer to keep them apart. Set the width yourself under Details, ta...
  • What do the looks give me?

Simple raised: a wood backer, the ground the trails cover as one wood piece with the contours, trees, signs and names burned in, and every trail welded into one bold raised piece on top (or one piece per difficulty, each in its sign colour). Few, big pieces to glue. Stepped terrain: the ground bu...
  • Which trails can I find?

Any trail system whose trails are mapped on OpenStreetMap, worldwide: mountain bike parks and networks, bike park lift zones, gravel and bikepacking loops. Search a trail system, a park, a mountain bike route or a town, and the builder lists every trail there. Paths mapped for mountain bikes (wit...
